Our kids. Our Colorado. Of all things precious, children and the environment should be our top priorities. They both need our protection and our support. We can invest in both and enjoy both. We can also mistreat both and perpetuate cycles of abuse and abandonment that will echo for generations. Or we can take intentional steps to appreciate their unique qualities, protect their innate value and nurture their potential to make the world a beautiful place.

Take Richard (pictured above), for example. Richard is in Environmental Learning for Kids' (ELK) year-round program. He is 17 years old and lives in an urban area of Denver called Montbello, which means beautiful mountain in Italian. Richard is part of ELK's leadership corps, and he also enjoys art, spinning and mixing music, being part of Junior ROTC, and fishing trips like the one pictured above to Rocky Mountain National Park. Richard is currently in the running for a full-ride scholarship to college, and in the fall, he hopes to attend either Colorado State University, University of Colorado, Denver University or Colorado School of Mines to study mechanical engineering -- and possibly minor in art or music. It's through ELK's encouragement that Richard is applying for scholarships and working toward his college goals, and it's because of ELK that Richard has experienced first-hand Colorado's montbello.

A gift of just $25 from you today will pay for a student like Richard to participate in six months of ELK activities, like camping trips, college visits, fishing clinics and other hands-on science experiences. By providing culturally diverse youth from urban neighborhoods with the opportunity to experience Colorado's natural resources, ELK educates and provides leadership training, expands their horizons and promotes responsible stewards of the environment. You can join the work by donating today.
