| It's time to bundle up and strap on those snowshoes. Snowshoeing is a great way to introduce yourself to winter backcountry travel. Come experience this wonderful opportunity to learn about the wildlife ecology of the Park. We will also be able to view the incredible wildlife, elk, deer, and maybe bighorn sheep. |

Ptarmigan Winter Surveys |
What could be more fun than looking for white birds on white snow? That's why we need a lot of help! This will be a day of snowshoeing with volunteers and staff from the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Division of Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to count white-tailed ptarmigan that live in the alpine tundra year-round. This is a strenuous field trip. |

Wildlife Studies with US Forest Service |
| We'll spend the day in the ponderosa pine forest just west of Denver learning about wildlife, especially the Abert's squirrel and Gunnison 's prairie dog. We'll help the U.S. Forest Service conduct surveys for this black squirrel with the big ears and figure out why the squirrel only likes certain trees. We'll also help the Forest Service restore some habitat for the Gunnison 's prairie dog. |

| 5th Annual Family Fishing Friend-Raiser! ELK friends will be fishing at Lake Lehow , a remote pond in Waterton Canyon . Tickets are $15 for an individual and $50 for a family of four. This includes a fantastic Bar-B-Q lunch, fishing lessons for beginners and other science activities. Children will get to take home their new fishing rod. |

Baseball & Fishing – America 's Two Favorite Pastimes |
Come along and enjoy this fun field trip to watch a Sky Sox baseball game in Colorado Springs and help teach over 200 youth how to cast a fishing rod on the baseball field before the game. This is a special week-long leadership opportunity for interested, mature students who have been in the program for at least one year. Students will learn about team building, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. This group of unique students will assist ELK staff in leading outdoor environmental education workshops. Students will learn about outdoor survival, orienteering, and identifying common wildlife and flora. We will also visit the four-corners area of Colorado and take a step back in time while we visit the ancient ruins at Mesa Verde. Cultural outreach with S. Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribes to teach fishing.

Deckers Float Trip |
| Bring your inner tubes for a great little float down the South Platte River just southwest of Denver. This flat-water section of the river is a great way to spend a hot summer day, especially when it's followed by ice-cream at Deckers! |

Hayman Fire Visit |
| It's been six years since the Hayman Fire burned 138,000 acres. This will be a great chance to see the changes ever since, and talk to Pike National Forest specialists about the role of fire in this ecosystem. We'll also spend some time searching for artifacts that may have been exposed by the fire. |

Colorado Dragon Boat Festival at Sloans Lake |
| ELK will once again participate in the Dragon Boat Festival at Sloans Lake students will have the opportunity to compete against other teams in this awesome Dragon Boat race. Other activities/entertainment that students and families will have a chance to explore are: Explore Asia, where you could meet and mingle with representatives from three local Asian communities (this year they were the Hmong, Mongolian and Filipino) watch and learn about Asian culture & Arts and grab a bite from different Asian Food vendors or shop around through their marketplace.
***Only students in the ages of 8-18 are allowed to race on the boats. Everyone else is welcomed to explore and join in the fun cheering for ELK's “Polar Bears” team.** |

Skipper Butterfly Study |
| In the entire world, the Pawnee montane skipper butterfly only lives in Colorado …and even then, only in a small area around the South Platte River near Deckers. Come work with volunteers and staff from the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to help find and learn about this rare butterfly. |

While on your visit to enjoy the Colorado State Fair, stop by the ELK Children's Activity Center in the Department of Natural Resources building at the Fair. Look through microscopes to view aquatic bugs, see live crawdad's, fish, and learn plenty about wildlife, water, and how to conserve and sustain our natural resources. |

RiverWatch Water Testing – Sand Creek & Montbello Adopt a Spot Cleanup
The second Tuesday of every month!
Jan. 8, Feb. 12, March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10, July 8, August 12, September 9, October 14, November 11, December 9. |
In addition to our regular field activities we are conducting water testing on Sand Creek which runs through Northeast Denver and flows into the S. Platte River. We will be taking interested, committed students along on these water samplings. Students will test the creeks pH, alkalinity, hardness, and dissolved oxygen. We will collect macroinvertebrate samples and work on identification by using microscopes. Learn about aquatic ecology, creek habitat, and participate in a community cleanup of our Adopt a Spot along Bolling Avenue in Montbello. |
